MOUNTAIN RANCH, Calaveras County — October 28, 2026. Mountain Ranch Road appears in two separate safety proposals in Calaveras County’s adopted 2026–27 Capital Improvement Program: a broader evacuation-route resiliency effort and an assessment of potential guardrail needs near Rocky Road. The county Board of Supervisors adopted the capital plan by resolution 20260512r022 on May 12, 2026.
What could change on the evacuation route?
The Mountain Ranch Road Safety and Evacuation Route Resiliency Project covers a proposed corridor from Sheep Ranch Road to Jesus Maria Road. County planners describe identifying hazardous trees, addressing slopes vulnerable to mudslides, and adding roadway turnouts where the existing alignment can create evacuation bottlenecks. These potential measures are meant to improve emergency access in wildfire and heavy-weather situations.
Why isn’t it under construction already?
The adopted plan states that an earlier version of the effort lost funding because of environmental constraints, an accelerated funding deadline and inadequate resources. The scope was reduced from a passing lane to smaller turnouts to address concerns. The county reports that the Calaveras Council of Governments submitted a grant request and the project is still in planning; its construction date and total cost are listed as to be determined.
What about guardrails near Rocky Road?
A separate project sheet calls for a roadside assessment on Mountain Ranch Road near Rocky Road. Depending on the results, county engineers could recommend guardrail and other targeted safety measures. Again, the 2026 plan lists the cost as undetermined and does not establish that guardrails have been installed. The two proposals should not be conflated into a funded construction contract.
